It is difficult to believe but we are nearing the end of October. Which means 2021 is 2 months from being over.

It also means Halloween!

The jack O’ Lanterns and skeletons are decorating your neighbor’s yard, your grocery stores are stocked up on Halloween themed candy, and your TV is promoting all of it’s spookiest content.

Well we thought we would bring you a few of our favorite movies/TV shows for this spooky season — and you know we have to keep it Black. And that brings us to Jordan Peele.

Jordan Peele is establishing himself as a staple in the horror genre. Starting out in comedy with his partner Keegan-Michael Key, it was sort of surprising how visceral and horrific his movies were. But he has given us a library of horror content for this spooky season.

So here are a few of our favorites:

1.Get Out

Whew! This one is arguably a classic. Peele delivers a horror tale that explores just how horrific racism can be, it is definitely worth the watch — and not just for the horror. The story is good and Daniel Kaluuya carries the lead role with excellence. CHECK IT OUT!

2. Us

Us was his follow up to Get Out. And it delivers. This one looks at family and history and how the two are so entwined. When I saw this, I left the theater wanting to watch it again.

3. Candyman

The first Candyman was a classic. The iconic saying of his name five times which would summon this horrific killer has been a recognizable trope for horror fans. And now we have a remake starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. It takes the mythology and adds another, more socially conscious layer that I think most of us will appreciate.

4. Lovecraft Country

Lovecraft Country came out on HBO in 2020 and if you are Black and a fan of science fiction and fantasy, this show is like a dream come true. It is an amalgamation of all the things we love about horror and fantasy and science fiction. It’s scary and fun and adventurous and truly worth the watch if you love Black people!

Jordan Peele has been at the forefront of taking horror starring Black people into the mainstream. Over the last couple years he has shown what is truly possible to talk about within that genre. And we appreciate it.

Enjoy your spooky season and let us know what you think when you watch!
