The Reality Of Being Your Own Boss

Being your own boss is everything you thought it was… AND MORE!

Now, there is nothing cooler than being your own boss. Having an idea, starting a business, and watching the money pour in is the new American Dream. But there is so much more to this life. The sooner you realize that, the better!! So check these 5 realities out and let us know what you think!

Being your own boss is freeing … And that is the hard part.

When you worked a job, you could clock in at 9 and clock out at 5. You could leave the job at the job. When something went off the rails, it may or may not have been up to you to fix it. It wasn’t your responsibility to keep the lights on. It wasn’t your show. But once you are your own boss, there is no one else to turn to. You are the decision maker. If something goes wrong, if it isn’t your fault, you have to fix it. IT’S YOUR BUSINESS! With freedom comes responsibility. It isn’t only about doing what you want to do when you want to do it; it’s about being in control of your own success… and taking responsibility for the failures. This is freedom.

If you didn’t work hard as an employee, you probably won’t as a boss either.

The skills you have learned over the years will be even more valuable to you as you become your own boss. I’m not sure everyone is aware that work ethic isn’t something we are born with — work ethic is a skill. Knowing how to work is learned. If you didn’t learn how to work hard and smart while  in the workforce, starting a business doesn’t naturally give you that skill. Simply because you have a passion for something doesn’t mean you automatically know how to keep working when it gets hard. No matter how much you love what you do, it will get hard and it will get hard often. If you didn’t give your best before, you probably won’t now.

You are only as strong as the team you build around yourself.

This isn’t only about who you hire. This is about the support system you have. Your friends, mentors, confidants, etc. Your ability to manage your business — and yourself — is related to the kinds of people you have around you. Surround yourself with people who can see your vision but will also always tell you the truth about your moves. You don’t always have to agree but you need to be able to trust that whatever they say is coming from a pure place.

Murphy’s Law is a thing.

Maybe you’re married, have kids, or you’re taking care of a family member, or you’re  a son or a daughter or a sister. You may be all the above. I don’t know your situation, but I wager your life outside of your business doesn’t always cooperate. Which means you are constantly juggling your personal life with business. Here is the thing: Life is always going to Life. The plans will more than likely not survive. And that’s okay. You became your own boss so you could be flexible and adjust to whatever is in front of you. YOU GOT THIS!

“It’s probably the hardest thing you will ever do; and the most rewarding.”

That speaks for itself.

Be your own boss, control your time, live the life you want to live. And know that this life isn’t for the faint of heart. Let us know what your reality is like being your own boss in the comments!
